Marimekko vs. Dolce & Gabbana for the use of the tulip motif

di Andrea Bigozzi

Marimekko is fighting Dolce & Gabbana for the famous Unikko floral motif. Essentially D&G is asking the EU trademark agency to overturn Marimekko's exclusive right to the use of the Unikko flower designed by Maija Isola in 1964. The Finnish company however believes that Dolce & Gabbana has used the flower emblem without its permission and has brought and won an action against the label in the court of Hamburg, which has issued an injunction against the trading of some Dolce & Gabbana products in Germany. “Marimekko is considering further action,” the company stated. It will present its case to the EU trademark authority by 25 September. (All rights reserved)
